Wuthering Heights

Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange on the bleak Yorkshire moors, is forced to seek shelter one night at Wuthering Heights, the home of his landlord. There he discovers the history of the tempestuous events that took place years before: of the intense passion between the foundling Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and her betrayal of him. As Heathcliff's bitterness and vengeance is visited upon the next generation, their innocent heirs must struggle to escape the legacy of the past.

This book has so many twists, turns, ups and downs. A beautiful love story between two very disturbed but passionate people that can never be together. It will make you laugh and cry. Its shocking, scary and heart warming. I love this book completely. The added story behind the authoress adds to the realisation of the deep meaning behind the novel. If there was only one book that I could ever read, it would be this one. I stunning look at the human condition. - Katie Leeke

I first read Wuthering Heights about 38 years ago, and I was totally enthralled by it. I love its economy and precision of the writing, and the way Emily Bronte creates atmosphere and character without using endless description. The characters are all so vivid and intense: larger than life though some of them are, they still feel intensely real to me. I also love the contrast between the emotional peaks of the book and the serenity of the ending. I re-read Wuthering Heights every couple of years, and every time I read it, I feel completely involved in it. - Dorothea Manley
